Blackwater Ridge National Recreation Area protects a broad landscape of wooded ridges, quiet lakes, winding trails, creek crossings, campgrounds, overlooks, and public spaces intended for time spent outside.
Since opening to visitors in 1968, the recreation area has welcomed hikers, campers, paddlers, families, trail crews, and travelers whose plans occasionally changed somewhere between the visitor center and the next marked junction.
Some visitors arrive with detailed itineraries. Others take the scenic detour.

FIELD NOTES SERIES
The Field Notes Journal
The official notebook of Blackwater Ridge, created for recording the routes taken, plans adjusted, places discovered, and details that might otherwise disappear by the time the trip is over.
Use it to document trail conditions, weather, campsites, overlooks, wildlife, maps, route changes, campground notes, and the unexpected parts of the day that become the story later.

Informal hiking groups, guided walks, seasonal route challenges, and long-running clubs devoted to muddy boots, questionable shortcuts, and returning by a reasonably marked trail.

Blackwater Ridge does not promise that every route will go according to plan. It only asks that visitors travel thoughtfully, care for the land, and leave enough time for the scenic detour.
